English as a Second Language (ESL) students may have various difficulties, such as limited exposure to English, difficulties in understanding <a href="https://www.teachstarter.com/us/teaching-resource-collection/idioms/">colloquial expressions and idioms</a>, and difficulties in understanding academic language. Here are some strategies that teachers can use to support the vocabulary development and cultural adaptation of ESL students in the U.S. education system.</div><h2 style="text-align: left;"><br />Use visual aids and realia: </h2><div>Visual aids, such as pictures, diagrams, and real objects, can be very helpful in supporting vocabulary development, especially for younger students or those with limited exposure to the language. By showing a picture of a new vocabulary word, for example, you can help the students make connections between the word and its meaning. Realia, or real objects, can also be used to introduce new vocabulary in a concrete and meaningful way. For example, if you teach the word "quilt," you can bring in a quilt for the students to see and touch. Posters using real images<a href="https://www.teachstarter.com/us/teaching-resource/adjective-posters-us"> like these </a>are better for ELL students because they depict objects in their true settings.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgu_Z3iEJYm9kbgm3ZpvB-qz1CdH3h1Zz2OjvgcbaMGLZqpzTQFBpAeMc4HHR9un9fRQqbn2fuEcEVW9MsQsC_e-BGuj_ITVrEWg2Wzv8rMSrG1Zv1eDHDTRpT97kI-yKUca5VVkGcLSCotFLJKMOMueOYGL5Tqp86PoBRX9h4E5LyTEHW_pWOmfmQu/s1920/child-4637663_1920.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1280" data-original-width="1920" height="426" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgu_Z3iEJYm9kbgm3ZpvB-qz1CdH3h1Zz2OjvgcbaMGLZqpzTQFBpAeMc4HHR9un9fRQqbn2fuEcEVW9MsQsC_e-BGuj_ITVrEWg2Wzv8rMSrG1Zv1eDHDTRpT97kI-yKUca5VVkGcLSCotFLJKMOMueOYGL5Tqp86PoBRX9h4E5LyTEHW_pWOmfmQu/w640-h426/child-4637663_1920.jpg" width="640" /></a></div><br /><div><br /></div><h2 style="text-align: left;">Use context clues:</h2><div> Context clues are hints in the text or the surroundings that help the reader or listener infer the meaning of a new word. For example, if a student comes across the word "flabbergasted" in a passage, the context clues "shocked" and "stunned" might help them understand the meaning of the word. Teachers can help ESL students develop their vocabulary by providing them with context clues and teaching them how to use them to infer the meaning of new words.</div><div><br /></div><h2 style="text-align: left;">Teach word parts: </h2><div>Word parts, such as <a href="https://www.teachstarter.com/us/teaching-resource-collection/prefixes-and-suffixes/">prefixes, suffixes, and roots</a>, can be very helpful in helping students understand the meaning of new words. For example, by teaching the prefix "anti-" (meaning "against"), a student might be able to guess the meaning of the word "antipathy" (a feeling of strong dislike). Teaching word parts can also help students understand the relationships between words and build their vocabulary more effectively.</div><div>A good place to start in upper elementary is with Greek and Latin roots. Building in daily lessons and displaying print-rich resources around the room will give your students constant exposure to words. Currently, I have these posters in my classroom and my students are CONSTANTLY referencing them.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://www.teachstarter.com/us/teaching-resource/greek-and-latin-roots-anchor-chart-pack" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="314" data-original-width="600" height="334" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhEmA7sSFki4uP3LMJKgPIG22c4Io6RhQTQ3Y3mW3bTPreN4nUFayf5cc4AMzuuh9gz0bx7ldR8nmljorXnvdpVaB1w2bnI8c_2tEqi5GEhxEmNm5MiGWWQtf4CVDE8uOK5nlAOfGLQcbS99VpePkKvQZ-5AyJvLx9pmRuS-qr3zMtdv96WOTL-yjRc/w640-h334/1402363-greek-and-latin-roots-anchor-chart-pack-thumbnail-0-600x400.png" width="640" /></a></div><br /><div style="text-align: center;">Get your posters from <a href="https://www.teachstarter.com/us/teaching-resource/greek-and-latin-roots-anchor-chart-pack">Teach Starter</a></div><div><br /></div><div><br /></div><div><br /></div><h2 style="text-align: left;">Use graphic organizers: </h2><div>Graphic organizers are visual tools that help students organize and understand new information. They can be particularly helpful for ESL students because they visually represent the relationship between words and concepts. Some examples of graphic organizers that can be used to support vocabulary development include <a href="https://www.teachstarter.com/us/teaching-resource-collection/graphic-organizers-2/">concept maps, Venn diagrams, and mind maps.</a></div><div><br /></div><h2 style="text-align: left;">Provide opportunities for oral and written practice: </h2><div>Providing opportunities for oral and written practice is essential for vocabulary development. Oral practice can be in class discussions, debates, presentations, and other activities requiring students to speak and listen to English. Written practice can be in the form of writing assignments, such as paragraphs, essays, or reports. Both oral and written practice can help students become more comfortable with using new vocabulary in different contexts and improve their overall language skills.</div><div><br /></div><div>For more ideas, check out Teach Starter's blog, <a href="https://www.teachstarter.com/us/blog/10-activities-for-speaking-and-listening-us">13 Speaking and Listening Activities to Boost Your Students' Skills</a></div><div><br /></div><h2 style="text-align: left;">Encourage the use of English outside of the classroom: </h2><div>Encouraging the use of English outside of the classroom is an important way to support the language development of ESL students. This can be as simple as encouraging students to speak English with their classmates during lunch or recess or encouraging them to watch English-language movies or TV shows. The more opportunities students have to use English in a natural and authentic setting, the more comfortable they will become with the language.</div><div><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjLUkMzLWD8UY2TnGPxADY_DKcgVrKI-LFhLILQO5rqHUv6WTK8dy0H0PcuUTmdu0kawFqZAsSHEDnJQqb_LPYMUM4b5GCbXsJeIoJAY7II-2nr_Lj9pb7FiJVUKMRlJzYvynQIjN7xTiKOjOal-B4uXc9zz-QaoL5ER5yySftZF6SUdesRZAVU1uhU/s1920/kids-1869823_1920.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1272" data-original-width="1920" height="424" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjLUkMzLWD8UY2TnGPxADY_DKcgVrKI-LFhLILQO5rqHUv6WTK8dy0H0PcuUTmdu0kawFqZAsSHEDnJQqb_LPYMUM4b5GCbXsJeIoJAY7II-2nr_Lj9pb7FiJVUKMRlJzYvynQIjN7xTiKOjOal-B4uXc9zz-QaoL5ER5yySftZF6SUdesRZAVU1uhU/w640-h424/kids-1869823_1920.jpg" width="640" /></a></div><br /><div><br /></div><h2 style="text-align: left;">Provide cultural support: </h2><div>Adjusting to a new education system can be challenging for any student, but it can be particularly difficult for ESL students who may also be adjusting to a new culture. Teachers can help these students by providing cultural support and education. This can include teaching students about the customs and traditions of the U.S., as well as including <a href="https://www.teachstarter.com/us/learning-area/culture-us/">activities highlighting students' own cultures and traditions.</a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiQPDaIkIWAZA-NMk8BuWgJa8ZsbxWZOPAUawH59s97i0AOvwsXp8MUoydfXupGjyfNYKIxkcqP8xAXLBjAIuJkMexaG_CaOPloduKUmzSquWxytLfjbd5RYbBsjOhgZFwu2H3DlpFw9UIpZW2Tpwm8-la3fYBiDpYjqeFN035APfL335ubiX7pMuCE/s1920/school-79612_1920%20(1).jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1371" data-original-width="1920" height="458" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiQPDaIkIWAZA-NMk8BuWgJa8ZsbxWZOPAUawH59s97i0AOvwsXp8MUoydfXupGjyfNYKIxkcqP8xAXLBjAIuJkMexaG_CaOPloduKUmzSquWxytLfjbd5RYbBsjOhgZFwu2H3DlpFw9UIpZW2Tpwm8-la3fYBiDpYjqeFN035APfL335ubiX7pMuCE/w640-h458/school-79612_1920%20(1).jpg" width="640" /></a></div><br /><div><br /></div>Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6289323896820578260.post-14611505374022986532022-11-10T23:51:00.001-05:002023-01-01T16:22:58.462-05:00<br /><h1 style="text-align: left;">Veterans Day in the Classroom</h1><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://www.teachstarter.com/us/teaching-resource/veterans-day-thank-you-card-and-craft/" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img alt="Teach Starter Veterans Day Craft for Kids" border="0" data-original-height="2045" data-original-width="3997" height="295" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgjk0r0QyRqU4ZR9t9jjViRJsI0Nh78cC28GRyJd0fCXmMceXOJfL_e3s0loQPKg25Aigz67Hd2KswPA8RvNvP-Ofjsfbr8iVvbzkKM0KwLL9g1himAGuFfBVWOB4ytaVkE-BUvss4m6sKKi3Vw4ujc1kidEJdc3b5N8iGbOE3jVk1LoUKw6hRivNB0/w575-h295/IMG_7619.jpg" width="575" /></a></div><br /><div>Every year, I spend a little time celebrating Veterans Day in my classroom to showcase veterans' sacrifices for our country. If you're looking to do something similar in your classroom, here are a few ways to celebrate Veterans Day.</div><div><br /></div><div>With limited time to create, I've come across a literal gold mine regarding classroom resources. <a href="http://www.teachstarter.com/us">Teach Starter</a>...just. go. check. it. out!</div><div><br /></div><div><div>1. Invite veterans to speak to your students. If possible, invite the veterans in your students' lives to come to school on Veterans Day itself. It's always fun to put up a Veterans Day bulletin board to show them how much they mean. </div><div><br /></div><div>2. Have your students write letters to veterans thanking them for their service. Teachers can make copies of letters that have been written by students in the past or create new ones based on what they know about the veteran they are writing to. We used this <a href="https://www.teachstarter.com/us/teaching-resource/veterans-day-thank-you-cards/">card template</a> two years in a row to send letters to the Wounded Warrior Project.</div><div><br /></div><div>3. Have your class read <a href="https://www.teachstarter.com/us/teaching-resource/veterans-day-printable-book/">books</a> about veterans or people who served in the military so that they understand what it means to serve our country and how much it means to those who do so!</div></div>Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6289323896820578260.post-53718717786298879222022-11-10T23:38:00.000-05:002023-01-01T16:22:58.462-05:00The Funniest Gift Exchange Ever!<br />
<br />
Hello Friends! Just dropping in on a quiet evening before Christmas to share a fun little activity that I did with my class this past week. Feel trree to pin any images and save this idea for next year. It is definitely one that I will do again!<br />
<br />
For a little background, I work in a Title I School in a very low income area. My students struggle to have the necessities, and it is even harder this time of year for them to come up with anything extra. On my teacher budget, I didn't have much extra to get them myself!<br />
<br />
I always love doing a gift exchange. However, this year it wasn't in the cards for my sweet kids, and I still wanted them to have some fun before our party. So instead of doing a traditional gift exchange, we decided to have the "Worst Christmas Gift Ever! Exchange. Students had a few rules to follow in order to participate.<br />
<br />
<ol>
<li>Nothing stinky. If it smells, it goes in the trash.</li>
<li>Nothing that could spread disease. (We had a big discussion on this!)</li>
<li>Nothing wet or sticky.</li>
<li>No bodily fluids. (including spit, poop, earwax, boogers, etc) Fun discussion.</li>
<li>It has to be a terrible gift to receive, and its wrapping must be bad as well.</li>
</ol>
<div>
To tie this into the curriculum, students were notified that they would be writing an opinion paper discussing the worst gift, and the characteristics that qualified it as the worst gift ever. And I have to tell you.... some of them were horrid! And the kids absolutely loved it! It was hilarious, all in good fun, and a creative way to tie in a piece of boring writing that last week before Christmas break. I will be sharing links to some resources below that you can use, as well as a few photographs of our horrendous Christmas gifts! Enjoy!</div>

A lovely potato makes a terrible Christmas gift... It was wrapped in wrapping that looked to have been shredded by a small animal. This one got a few laughs from the kids.<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
Pretty gross one here... A bag of old candy wrappers, enveloped in cat hair trimmings. It was pretty gross, when you got up close. Twas also wrapped in a lovely sheathing of old aluminum foil.<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />

Lovely mustachioed Barbie doll... at one point she was decapitated and her head was being passed around. She wasn't wrapped at all!<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhDx6Z5ZqcszCx53yzM5DgOi3I8d4ncMAM2NJbXFNGtvJifS2Nt6Xa382e2u6wORTHGcccPsGJVTNkN3cPzpbgTUIRFnoPcocNFERO-ijxTJ1jTvdvzLdgnb-F3Hbx_2d0m55lkU02yQCs/s1600/IMG_7906.JPG" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1200" height="200" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhDx6Z5ZqcszCx53yzM5DgOi3I8d4ncMAM2NJbXFNGtvJifS2Nt6Xa382e2u6wORTHGcccPsGJVTNkN3cPzpbgTUIRFnoPcocNFERO-ijxTJ1jTvdvzLdgnb-F3Hbx_2d0m55lkU02yQCs/s200/IMG_7906.JPG" width="150" /></a></div>
This one was pretty creepy. The hairy blob you see was once a Barbie Head. She was given a haircut, covered in glue, and dipped in her own hair clippings and paint. She was also given a pencil neck, a bed of broken bracelets, and a lovely wrapping of brown paper bag. The gift that keeps on giving.... you the creeps....<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjStbRsXNq8pw-OlTqAnYoLYIQjbECxwOgFt-P0EVbhm_A8clR03B8BrcxN-z0Q3O2o4OUcKXBHC3y99vgYJYckeHgPbPt2FDbkDv45AE_4D94BLxYJdQK85Xr0-58US9Hv8mz_xWe9g8o/s1600/IMG_7903.JPG" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1200" height="200" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjStbRsXNq8pw-OlTqAnYoLYIQjbECxwOgFt-P0EVbhm_A8clR03B8BrcxN-z0Q3O2o4OUcKXBHC3y99vgYJYckeHgPbPt2FDbkDv45AE_4D94BLxYJdQK85Xr0-58US9Hv8mz_xWe9g8o/s200/IMG_7903.JPG" width="150" /></a></div>
Sad...Sad...Sad.... iPad Mini box. The kid who got this one was really excited... and then opened it to find a measly little bookmark. I think this one got the biggest round of giggles.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEga-GSSDJb-IX-Jgw_ljL13lRwg70wSiJBz7CEL8e1ChTHqQtwpUQREBrG6IQ_jNp8XhRVs4-s5wjCD8v5O2IH4RuXAAZwM5FRtnYYWzMxsybeBq5RC9zI3beLCioOGm19MXVi8INnfBdQ/s1600/IMG_7915.JPG" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1200" height="200" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEga-GSSDJb-IX-Jgw_ljL13lRwg70wSiJBz7CEL8e1ChTHqQtwpUQREBrG6IQ_jNp8XhRVs4-s5wjCD8v5O2IH4RuXAAZwM5FRtnYYWzMxsybeBq5RC9zI3beLCioOGm19MXVi8INnfBdQ/s200/IMG_7915.JPG" width="150" /></a></div>
<div>
And a final entry into the foray of horrible gifts.... Here we have a teddy bear made from toilet paper and tape, then covered in dryer lint. It smelled of hairspray, so I'm guessing that was the adhesive for the lint. Honestly, it was a little creepy looking. And it was wrapped in a Doc McStuffins Pull-Up.... Definitely a terrible thing to wrap a gift in.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
All in all, the activity was a big hit with my kiddoes. They went straight to their desks after the present passing, and started jotting down characteristics and ideas for the gift that they felt was the worst. Once their ideas were in place, they were able to jump online and start a rough draft essay using the document linked below. Feel free to click the link and make yourself a copy. If you use Google Classroom, and Google Slides, you will find that it may be useful for your students.</div>

<span style="font-size: large;">Holy smokes, Folks!! It has been a long time since my last post here. Between life, school, and a toddler who is wide open pretty much 24 hours a day, there hasn't been an inkling of time for me to get in here and start sharing again.</span></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="font-size: large;">As an update, many of you know that I made the move two years ago to middle school. While I really enjoyed the kids, and the fun literature that I got to teach to my 6, 7, and 8th grade kids, the environment that I walked into was not a good one. I stayed for two years, and couldn't do it anymore. I loved my kids, my coworkers, and my curriculum. However, administration made it very difficult to love my job. So this year... I was lucky enough to voyage my way back into elementary school!!</span></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="font-size: large;">I left the middle school, and walked right back into the same elementary school that I left two years ago. This time, I was happy to accept a fifth grade position that specialized in Mathematics. So currently, I am teaching three segments of Math each day, one Advanced Content Reading Block, and a Block of Language arts. So far, I'm really enjoying it! The math is brutal, and has a huge learning curve...but I'm readjusting once again. I feel like I am back where I needed to be, and I couldn't be more happy. </span></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="font-size: large;">So as a reintroduction, I am sharing my classroom this year. I'm two doors down from my old classroom, and the layout is pretty much the same. But my love for Harry Potter reared its head and made its way into my classroom. Below are all of the photos of my Harry Potter Classroom this year! Hope you enjoy them!</span></div>

<div style="text-align: center;">
Hello everyone!! This week I'm linking up once again with Fourth Grade Frolics for Monday Made It! And since I'm all finished with my classroom, I thought I would share my classroom reveal at the same time! All of my decor this year was made by me and I can't be more excited about how it all turned out!! Get ready, because this might be a lengthy post!!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div style="text-align: center;">

<div style="text-align: center;">
First off, my outdoor bulletin board is all Minion-ized. Since I don't have a Cameo or anything, all of those minions and lettering were printed and hand-cut by yours truly.. I have a blister to prove it! I love the way it turned out and can't wait for the kiddoes to come in and see them!</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">

<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Inside the classroom, I only have one bulletin board--but it runs the entire length of the room. That big thing gets split into all sorts of configurations, and it ended up looking like this!</div>

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Our daily schedule is on the far end, and the larger section is where I will post all of our learning objectives. Almost done! Here are just a couple more things that I made for my classroom. LABELS! I love organized materials, so I label things for my kids and for myself to keep us in order. First up is my math carts. These carts store the things we need for math stations. Fact cards, our timed tests, and any manipulatives or sheets we need are in this cart. The kids will be responsible for getting their own things ready for the period and it all comes out of this cart.</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
And I was finally able to hang up some of my TPT goodies, like these Subway Art Synonym Posters that I got from <a href="https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Character-Traits-Synonyms-Subway-Art-Posters-1925751">The Brown Bag Teacher</a>.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
And that's about it... I also made some yellow curtains for my room as well, but I forgot to take a picture of them... I'm not very proud of those since I used my stapler to make them!! But you can't even tell because they hang at the top of about a 10 foot tall window. I've got a couple more things in store, but right now I'm going to enjoy being home with my husband and my girls...because work starts again on Tuesday. Where did my summer go??</div>

Howdy again! Today I'm linking up with my friend Cyndie again from <a href="http://chalkoneupfortheteacher.blogspot.com/" target="_blank">Chalk One up for Teacher</a>! It is Two For Tuesday, and I thought I would share some BACK TO SCHOOL (those are bad words) goodies with you! The two products you see below are two different versions of my Math Mosaics available in my store. One set is for multiplication, so grades 4-5 would be able to do these at the beginning of the year. The other set is addition, something that I use as morning work on the first days of school when my kiddoes are just getting used to the routine. I hope you'll check them out and grab them up while they are on sale! They are currently marked down to $1.50 per set, instead of $3.00<br />

Pacing Guide and 3-D Projects<div style="text-align: center;">
Hello again, it's Made It Monday! This week I haven't done a lot as far as craftiness, but I have been working on some things for school.. (sad face--I go back in two weeks). I'm usually itching to get my classroom set up, but this year my heart is in another place. You see, I've been home since April with my baby girl, and it breaks my heart to even think of leaving her. The smiles I get when she wakes up in the mornings are priceless, and I'm going to miss those so much when I go back. Luckily, she will be staying home with her daddy so I don't have to worry about her going to daycare.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
So here we go with my Monday Made Its! Just a couple of simple things this week.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4thgradefrolics.blogspot.com/" target="_blank"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjin9zEeNN5LyRV2Cy54r2SC-444XIcVs6DOpLwuYuvc2fJcttdwq-UGTq1LhQ0uHUMMQRM4UxCuWZ33K5OYIi5moaREvyaUJKLu-WomNRcvmLkx6h2U2umc5kQYdhtVhbnvsLFJi4D60M/s320/Monday+Made+It+1.png" width="320" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
First of all, I want to share with you a couple of 3-D projects I created for my TPT store. They are aligned with the Georgia Social Studies and Science standards for 3rd grade, so if you know another teacher in Georgia that needs materials, share this post with them!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEigO1hVTJKlkd49WDjx4AVIKQliY9kLwuGHLBb2MpyoEmfMKtq0fpx8mlsZlIHTcpwQxooH1KKKU3FD3_1WVrWuERIyJfRzJYek6dkjKtvxPq03-2OdAL0mRqKYNrbn010D9f0791J_RL4/s1600/Button+1.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEigO1hVTJKlkd49WDjx4AVIKQliY9kLwuGHLBb2MpyoEmfMKtq0fpx8mlsZlIHTcpwQxooH1KKKU3FD3_1WVrWuERIyJfRzJYek6dkjKtvxPq03-2OdAL0mRqKYNrbn010D9f0791J_RL4/s1600/Button+1.png" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
The first project I finished up was my 3-D Georgia Regions Cube. With this one, students do all of their work throughout the unit on the packet handouts, and at the end, create an awesome 3-D cube. If you are interested, click on the cover image below.</div>

<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
The second one that I created was a bit of a stretch for me. This one covers all of the famous Americans that we study here in Georgia. It is much like the cube project, only it ends up creating a DODECAHEDRON! It is a twelve-sided creation that my kids are sure to love. And they make awesome display pieces. We've been together for seven years now, and each year gets a bit better than the last. The next few images are my pacing guide for the year. </div>

The next page shows what happens when we get to Spring testing season. At the beginning of March, each of us four teachers departmentalizes and teaches a single subject to all four classes. Our kids rotate through all of the classrooms in the mornings, and we finish up review activities in the afternoons. We find that it works amazingly well, and breaks up some of the humdrum of test review.</div>

Good Morning Friends! Once again, I'm linking up with <a href="http://4thgradefrolics.blogspot.com/" target="_blank">Fourth Grade Frolics</a> for another Monday Made It! Last week, I showed you my back to school bulletin board and this week I'm going to share some more goodies for that theme. Make sure you read all the way to the end, because there is a surprise in store down there!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
In case you missed it, this was my outside bulletin board from last week.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div style="text-align: center;">
First up, are my new classroom rule posters and nameplates. I do plan on cutting the white borders off as soon as the baby wakes up. She's snoozing and the sound of scissors wakes her up every time. The second picture shows my new nameplates. They are small so they don't take up much room on our desks, and I will write names on them and tape over them when the time comes.</div>

Second in line, you will find my set of schedule cards. My schedule is magneted to my board with that magnetic sticky tape. I will do that and write the times for each segment on when the time comes and I have my final schedule.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
The objective signs will go on my focus wall. I have small posterboard that I laminated. Each of the minion headers will hang above a piece of the posterboard. That is where I will write my objectives each day/week. </div>

<div style="text-align: center;">
And finally, number three!! These are my A.R. Point goal posters. As the kids meet each level they get a prize as well as the opportunity to put their name card on the wall beneath the poster. Simple, yet effective for motivating them to read!!</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
These are my Math Master's Level Headers. My students have buttons that are push pinned to the bulletin board. Each time they pass a level of multiplication, they get to move their button to that poster. Again, simple yet effective.</div>

<div style="text-align: center;">
Hello friends!! I'm linking up with Kristin today from School and the City! Many of us TPTers are headed for Vegas this week but it looks like I'm putting it off another year. We got a surprise last August and found out I was pregnant with Baby #2 and it completely changed our lives.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
We had not been expecting to have another, and it was a complete shock for it to happen eight years after the first. So needless to say, while I'm a tiny bit jealous of the Vegas attendees, I have something better to occupy my time right now. I have two beautiful girls who need me right here at home...and I'm just fine with that.</div>

<br /></div>
<br />
Howdy folks! Today I'm linking up with <a href="http://4thgradefrolics.blogspot.com/2015/07/monday-made-it-july-6.html" target="_blank">4th Grade Frolics</a> for my very first Monday Made It!! Now with the new baby, I don't get much time. But I use every minute of naptime for something these days...mostly laundry and dishes (ugh). But I have made a few things lately and I thought I would share!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjQiSZZqVFVA5FEqlUOj0nOc5RnD2zBxSbOSv2OzjRoIfuXgrC8Q2WYZsdAnAsqiBSboJdsncHwPBv9O3gK3TccPnACNfCAUKebLcd4-ucr1QaB7uDwqwweqXj2q3VIUTHTiALp-Oa8y40/s1600/Button+1.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjQiSZZqVFVA5FEqlUOj0nOc5RnD2zBxSbOSv2OzjRoIfuXgrC8Q2WYZsdAnAsqiBSboJdsncHwPBv9O3gK3TccPnACNfCAUKebLcd4-ucr1QaB7uDwqwweqXj2q3VIUTHTiALp-Oa8y40/s1600/Button+1.png" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
My first "Made It" was put together for my baby girl's nursery. I desperately wanted those fancy letters that spell her name on the wall, but I wasn't about to pay upwards of twenty bucks a letter for them. So I took it upon myself and my clipart/computer skills to come up with a matching set of letters just for her wall. $3.00 frames from Walmart and I had a pretty little way of putting her name up.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
And on to the next one!</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div style="text-align: center;">
My last Monday Made It is my favorite! I always struggle with bulletin boards. I've been using the same one for four years. It was nothing fancy....Just a welcome sign with circle cutouts with the kids names put on them. This year I wanted something new and fun to put up for the beginning of the year and I couldn't think of anything more fun than MINIONS!! I love those little yellow guys and they make my daughter laugh hysterically. So I decided to put together a Minion themed bulletin board. Here it is in all its glory...lying on my kitchen floor since I can't get into the school building until the end of the month.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">

My Teacher PlannerGood Morning Friends! I'm blogging while the baby is sleeping, but she's starting to stir so this might be a short and sweet post. Today I am linking up with Kreative in Kindergarten and Keeping up with Mrs. Harris for Plan With Me Sundays! Today I wanted to share my teacher planner with you!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br /></div>
Truth be told, I would LOVE an Erin Condren planner, but that money would have to come out of the diaper and formula budget so I have to improvise and make my own. In total,( my planner cost me a whopping $4.28 at Office Depot. The cover I did at home, the copies I made at school, and the binding was the only out of pocket expense. (Unless you count my pens and washi tape). So here we go!<br />

As I sit here in the dark, at five in the morning, I can think of nothing more than the need to go back to sleep. However, I choose to stop in and say hello. It has been quite a long time since I blogged, and I've had a pretty good reason.<br />
<br />
You see, I've recently become a mommy of two, rather than a mommy of one. That's right! Baby number two arrived on April 21st of this year, and the past six weeks have been a whirlwind of sleepless nights, diaper changes, and full on freak-outs by my eight year old. And now I'd like to introduce you to the cause of all this wonderful chaos.... Avery Rose--my seven pound bundle of joy!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
There she is...in all her naked baby glory. She has grown so fast and doesn't really look like the little tiny thing you see above. So here's my girl now..</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
The baby fat rolls are starting to set in and she's looking more like her daddy every day. We're doing a bit better with sleeping at night. Up until this point, she stayed awake all night and slept all day. But, we're getting about six hours a night and I'm perfectly fine with that.<br />
<br />
But for now, I will close and make the promise that I will be blogging once again...when Avery allows it that is..<br />

Howdy Friends! Holy Smokes I'm blogging! I'm full speed ahead but I want to stop in and share a few posts with you that I'm calling the "How We Do" series. Each post will be a descriptive sharing of "how we do" a certain aspect of our day, and this week, it's HOW WE DO...Guided Math Groups.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I've tried them all... Daily Five, Rotating Calendars, Meeting with One Group at a time and changing three times during the period...And to tell you the truth, I hated them all. So much to manage, Little Johnny in the corner drawing pictures and then Susie and Sarah playing hair salon instead of Multiplication War. I was just tired of the hassle, and seeing my kids off task. I wanted to make the most of what time we had every day, so this year, I changed it up...A LOT!</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
To give you a little background, I have a fifty minute segment for guided math/intervention beginning at 8:00 in the morning. It's hard to get revved up that early, but I manage. To begin with, my intervention time actually starts with my kids doing their morning work. Every day, we do a Spiral Math Review that I project, rather than copy. If you're interested, you can find it <a href="http://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Common-Core-3rd-Grade-Spiral-Math-170-Days-Projectable-or-Printable-701818">here</a>. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
The kids see something every day like what you see below. They do all of the work in a notebook and then read for the remaining early morning time.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg-DNtLNLdH2ETmBsIRTo_K-nDgTygWOOXMB-FSSBcsDj3LLeTA39WL_hnaA1s29EC0N_FXJUghg0dQMeE91Zam5FRdjEEJPhCb9rHB4O9ASgpWxotqRo3oyqDYR9Wa_eeQ_zTnv4ldcvk/s1600/SpiralMathLockedFinal.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg-DNtLNLdH2ETmBsIRTo_K-nDgTygWOOXMB-FSSBcsDj3LLeTA39WL_hnaA1s29EC0N_FXJUghg0dQMeE91Zam5FRdjEEJPhCb9rHB4O9ASgpWxotqRo3oyqDYR9Wa_eeQ_zTnv4ldcvk/s1600/SpiralMathLockedFinal.jpg" height="300" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
The problems get harder, and the concepts spiral throughout the year... Put it to you this way, every single kid will remember expanded and base ten form, as well as rounding by the end of the year.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
As soon as 8:00 hits, we pull out a crayon and go over the Daily Math Review, checking our answers and discussing the word problem..in detail. This takes a total of about ten minutes. Once that's finished, we take ten minutes of practice time with partners, and then take our daily math facts timed tests. I get all of my tests from Multiplication.com and have them all ready to hand out and test.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Once this is all done, we jump into our Math Groups which are based off of the poster that you see below.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiUYe4WQyJ6w9GWnl6q59TuqMQYv9pMnz26uVgEBNz8nEhp2WfbFKesKOHXZ9OrY8gyoNy0uTRAOowoZ-tLkUK4zqMb8hyphenhypheni1qin5YtzhIZzymR0ARESDxWpxaad6YunxjL3rLzSSC0oufI/s1600/2014-08-29+14.49.10.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiUYe4WQyJ6w9GWnl6q59TuqMQYv9pMnz26uVgEBNz8nEhp2WfbFKesKOHXZ9OrY8gyoNy0uTRAOowoZ-tLkUK4zqMb8hyphenhypheni1qin5YtzhIZzymR0ARESDxWpxaad6YunxjL3rLzSSC0oufI/s1600/2014-08-29+14.49.10.jpg" height="300" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Groups are color coded based on their skill levels, and they will change later on. But for now, these groups are where we will stay. Each day of the week, a specific group has a station for the day. They stay at that station for the entire period and complete whatever it is they have been assigned. The stations are as follows:</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="color: blue;"><b>Odyssey Math- This is a computer program we use based on each students' individual test scores.</b></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="color: blue;"><b>Dice Games- We do Multiplication War, Race to 5,000, and lots of others.</b></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="color: blue;"><b>Rainbow Write- Simple and easy, they use markers and write their facts in rainbow colors.</b></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="color: blue;"><b>Task Cards- I have tons of them and pull out a review set every week for practice.</b></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="color: blue;"><b>iPod Math- We pull in a set of eight iPods and the kids practice their facts on them.</b></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Wait, what's that you say?? There's no GUIDED Math.. Actually there is... Based on performance in the classroom, I will pull individual students out of their rotations for the day and work with those kids on the specific skills they are missing or need a little more practice with. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
And that's it folks...No crazy calendar thing to deal with, no rotating groups through the room. We stay in one spot, deal with what we've got, and move right on through. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
In case your interested in the poster, I'm attaching it below. Just a note, it's formatted to print 16x20. All I did was type in my stuff, save it as a pdf, save that to a flash drive, take it to Office Depot, and they printed it for me on their jumbo printer.. (I WANT ONE!!) It cost me about eight bucks to print it. It is editable in PowerPoint and the fonts are embedded so they should still work for you! I hope you enjoy it!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>

Hello again! This will make my third week back in school and my kiddoes have jumped into everything feet first. Classroom procedures are down and we are buzzing right through the curriculum that I've planned out. We've even got a field trip coming up this week! I love early-in-the-year field trips.. They happen before the spring crazies set in.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
One area I have struggled in for the past eight years of teaching is HOMEWORK! How much is too much? How much is too little? Should they have it every night? Should it be spelling and math, reading and math, or all three? Ugh...just too much stuff to handle and I hate overburdening my kids when we work so hard at school all day. However, I do see the value in a little uninterrupted time in the evenings for a bit of homework. It bridges the home-school gap, and it gives those kids who REALLY need it a bit more practice. This year, I revamped my homework system and I'd like to show you a bit about it.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
First of all, I dropped Spelling homework entirely. We do our word study activities during Guided Reading, so why repeat the same ones at home? I chose to focus my kids on Reading Comprehension and Math facts each night for their homework assignments. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
For reading homework each night, I use these bad boys! LOVE!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgPkga_cUzfWy6QUpeMNYNtxTYe8AR7bXKx__Y0qb8IW3ltwy_QJtGAYvlf8JTfdVNYbxyUswkgexmIRd-zcKdGMfwlj6T6n0qa0WxAyTpxscYYwHUssMJuHRJw5jHOJLI0vX_i7n0VXow/s1600/time.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgPkga_cUzfWy6QUpeMNYNtxTYe8AR7bXKx__Y0qb8IW3ltwy_QJtGAYvlf8JTfdVNYbxyUswkgexmIRd-zcKdGMfwlj6T6n0qa0WxAyTpxscYYwHUssMJuHRJw5jHOJLI0vX_i7n0VXow/s1600/time.jpg" height="400" width="300" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
This year I had a DonorsChoose project funded for Time for Kids Magazine. Now I teach third, but ordered the second grade magazines for my kiddoes. I didn't want anyone to really have to struggle to read the text. I wanted them to be able to attack it and understand it. These magazines are the heart of our reading homework.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
On Mondays, my kids get their homework packet, with the newsletter attached. This newsletter combines a classroom update, homework assignments, weekly multi-syllable word list (they must be able to read them fluently by the end of the week) and important notes for parents.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiR2CeJGtZ8BXHdcYCIv8yPxI5sximqAWLO5SWX3JPHxsgnHkqE0h4yAxUjRiJlNwC80mLEC4RM4Uuilk0HAzjzu4TdlqMRwFQJHPH3SvfPHwkQdKnG7tg4YoXGBI0hrGdHOdP4vwXEgTw/s1600/Homework+Cover.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiR2CeJGtZ8BXHdcYCIv8yPxI5sximqAWLO5SWX3JPHxsgnHkqE0h4yAxUjRiJlNwC80mLEC4RM4Uuilk0HAzjzu4TdlqMRwFQJHPH3SvfPHwkQdKnG7tg4YoXGBI0hrGdHOdP4vwXEgTw/s1600/Homework+Cover.jpg" height="400" width="300" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Each night, my students complete their homework by reading their Time magazine and completing only five comprehension questions that I write each night. Yes, I do have to take the time to write fifteen questions per week, but it only takes me about fifteen minutes to churn them out and type them in. Here's a snapshot of what I'm talking about.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjje_ZbNdApJBdtLgKB8PsJrhmrsjn1TgIY1ckrev-RIQVazx__bw6UlRp6l8eKNzIcNjOtvlHdFUSVps6XBMeHWEvyZAbMqf6ATZc9G7UlF_imQSKMJPEI5onvdLv5n6J0YFhokSCHGc8/s1600/InteriorHW.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjje_ZbNdApJBdtLgKB8PsJrhmrsjn1TgIY1ckrev-RIQVazx__bw6UlRp6l8eKNzIcNjOtvlHdFUSVps6XBMeHWEvyZAbMqf6ATZc9G7UlF_imQSKMJPEI5onvdLv5n6J0YFhokSCHGc8/s1600/InteriorHW.jpg" height="400" width="300" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
The last night of Reading homework consists of having the students read aloud their magazine and answer the questions on the back of the magazine. Easy Peasy!</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Math is another story. Fact fluency is a big deal at my school in general, so my students also take their math fact cards home each night to practice those. The activities vary, sometimes rainbow write, quiz with a parent, two times each, etc. My kids are responsible for bringing their cards to and from home every day and also for turning in all evidence of completing their math fact practice, so I also attach the page you see below.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgUF9PDWbxv9gjDJo3N4v-NpuYfLYZlh60ti-zoipWK7MgHzZ1rHtJnmC7-u7pZ5w2ZEtTuPIgwNvapnekgLRsEXPCwq4AfdbPy619RjCLQDbElKeZzlDfAMkPaeAq0p4T_XmBDYLdthiM/s1600/MathHW.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgUF9PDWbxv9gjDJo3N4v-NpuYfLYZlh60ti-zoipWK7MgHzZ1rHtJnmC7-u7pZ5w2ZEtTuPIgwNvapnekgLRsEXPCwq4AfdbPy619RjCLQDbElKeZzlDfAMkPaeAq0p4T_XmBDYLdthiM/s1600/MathHW.jpg" height="400" width="300" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I not only teach math and reading, I also teach responsibility. I want my third graders to be responsible for their own things so I send homework home on Monday, and don't see it again until Friday. If it's missing, they complete it during recess and that's just the way things roll. I also do a Friday Lunch Bunch with the kids who complete everything to encourage those few slackers who like to skip out on homework. We eat lunch in the classroom and...dare i say it...WATCH CARTOONS! They love it, and so far..it's motivating them to practice at home each night.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
If you have access to Time for Kids, I would definitely recommend them for homework assignments. If not, you could do the same thing with those little leveled readers that come with your basal sets. So far, I feel a lot less stressed about homework, and the kids are actually enjoying it!</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
As always, I love your comments and I'd also love to hear how you manage your homework in your own classroom! </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Have a great week!</div>
<img src="http://i1064.photobucket.com/albums/u378/designbychristi/blogs/randisig.png" />Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14017194537794700967noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6289323896820578260.post-81939846360778562402014-08-29T20:39:00.000-04:002014-08-29T20:39:12.168-04:00Classroom Reveal! 2014-2015<div style="text-align: center;">
Wow guys!! I've been back at school for over two weeks now and am just now caught up enough to sit down and blog about beginning the year! My classroom didn't get a giant makeover this year, but I did add a few things, make a few things, and still have a couple more additions to add to it over the next week. So here goes!</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Here are a couple of pictures of my room right before the kiddoes came in for meet your teacher night. I did get the bulletin board finished up and ready before they arrived. All of their desks were so neat and tidy...Now that we're two weeks in...not so much...</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEikF2kSePLiqj7hL9bh6p0t2mMmnFSyPH53UCrVA9mV69d4xWfl3gz5C5yh3cSXEJmlg4TFpwT7PjZVdoDpAWy4GE5J-CaSLDl5v0pLp-tEIrgkFjLe4Lqi_52kfytlZ-XTIWM6as7dZrA/s1600/2014-07-28+14.59.06-1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEikF2kSePLiqj7hL9bh6p0t2mMmnFSyPH53UCrVA9mV69d4xWfl3gz5C5yh3cSXEJmlg4TFpwT7PjZVdoDpAWy4GE5J-CaSLDl5v0pLp-tEIrgkFjLe4Lqi_52kfytlZ-XTIWM6as7dZrA/s1600/2014-07-28+14.59.06-1.jpg" height="400" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
The back corner of my room before the addition of my new kidney table. I got a project funded from DonorsChoose.org at the end of the school year and they were kind enough to deliver it during preplanning so that I could get it all put together and setup. I don't have a picture of it so you'll kind of just have to imagine a kidney table where the easel sits in this picture.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjn0V_CtZsakHZkA53Vhgf1HBbvP2RqL41oNc1-cbb2DQktq1VLkSLC1dj3yIJkifqsm7JajPrXpL60nXWwaxq6PsJSihjBo9xNM6b5gcbB86hFzjwb76P0BOJiZj50mYtQgDdJJ5G5Qu4/s1600/2014-07-28+14.59.36.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjn0V_CtZsakHZkA53Vhgf1HBbvP2RqL41oNc1-cbb2DQktq1VLkSLC1dj3yIJkifqsm7JajPrXpL60nXWwaxq6PsJSihjBo9xNM6b5gcbB86hFzjwb76P0BOJiZj50mYtQgDdJJ5G5Qu4/s1600/2014-07-28+14.59.36.jpg" height="400" width="300" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
This is where I hide all of my teacher <strike>junk </strike>materials. I bought two cheapo curtains from Walmart and a roll of ribbon to make my own curtains to cover the things I don't want to see all day, every day. All the stuff on top of the shelf, sans the tissue box, have been removed and hidden away in my closets. Student mailboxes, supply bins, and a few other goodies hide under the small table and the easel makes it's home right there where you see it. The bins beneath the easel hold guided reading materials, all color coded to my reading groups so each group only has to grab their bin and they're ready to go for the day!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

My desk...In a sort of clean state.. I try to keep the top manageable...The drawers on the other hand...are a stinking MESS!! I'm terrible with drawer organization and I'm constantly just tossing things in there. I've lost the remote to my projector three times already...and found it two days later..IN MY DESK!! I'm lucky enough to have a projector, document camera, smartboard, and laptop in my room.. And you guessed it...right under the phone..is a VCR!! The district bought new DVD players and they all tore up within two years, so I had to have something to get closed circuit TV and the VCR was all I got! But I actually like it, I can bring in my Schoolhouse videos to watch in class!!</div>

These were my summer project!! Again, a cheapo curtain from Walmart, some scrap plywood, a crapload of staples, and I have a handy set of eight crate seats. We sit on them during small group, and extra paper towels, cleaning wipes, and other supplies are stored inside! I think these might have been my favorite addition!</div>

Half of my focus wall here... I made all of the headers and A.R. posters right here at home! I LOVE the A.R. posters and can't wait until my kids get to start signing their names to them as the reach their levels. Below are our standards that we are studying. The white pages are laminated posterboard and I just wipe em' down as I need to change standards.</div>

<div style="text-align: center;">
The other half of my focus board. These are little wooden buttons (from Micheal's) that I painted and stuck a sticker to. Each kid has a button that they get to move once they've mastered a particular set of multiplication facts. They love them and are already racing through their facts this year!! Did I mention my class is built for Advanced Content? This has never happened so early in the year before!</div>

Our work display board and half of our classroom library. These bins I got from ReallyGoodStuff and I LOVE them.. They have little dividers in them so the books don't fall forward! Somehow, my kiddoes have removed and lost one of my labels, but no worries..when you make them yourself, all you've got to do is reprint!</div>

<div style="text-align: center;">
This poster was a recent addition and hasn't made it's way to a permanent location. So right now it is magneted to the board until the kids get used to their rotations during flex groups. I have three groups, each color coded, that go through a series of rotations each week. Every day, all of the kids go to a math station, and I pull individual kids from their rotations for remediation. I've tried the scheduling each kid for different things on different days and it just doesn't work for me. I like knowing that everyone has a place to be, and when I need them, I can just pull them out and reteach things as needed. I made the poster at home, had it printed and enlarged at Office Depot, and that was it! I think it cost me about $9.00 for the printing and laminating. </div>

And that's it for the photos...There are several other things that I want to show you over the next couple of weeks so I'll save those for another post. I hope you've enjoyed your walk through my classroom, and I also hope you'll stop back in soon (maybe on Sunday) for some exciting news!!</div>

I was recently given the opportunity to check out an awesome app called <a href="http://www.farfaria.com/" style="color: rgb(253, 55, 125) !important; text-decoration: none;" target="_blank">FarFaria</a>. I wasn't sure, when I first heard about it, whether or not it would be age appropriate for my kiddoes at school, or my second grade daughter. As it turns out, it is, and we <strong>LOVE</strong> it! I struggle with finding quality apps that will both engage my students and encourage them to read. The fact that these books are available through the iPad (or Android) is an extra perk for us! Each day, my students use some form of technology, whether it be an iPad, iPod, or classroom computer. My daughter uses my iPad every evening as well That's where this app REALLY comes into play. It has TONS of books that are just right for your lower level readers and little guys as well. The app allows you to read one book, FOR FREE, every day. However, if you, like us, want to read more than one per day, there is also an option to subscribe to unlimited books! In fact, I'm giving away a 3 month subscription below, so be sure to check it out below and enter to win one for yourself.<br />
<br />
FarFaria was originally created for children ages 2-9 years of age, but they have a section of stories just for toddlers as well. They also have a book selection gauged towards preschoolers and other age groups as well, of course. The pictures/illustrations in the stories are absolutely beautiful and the kids really love them! The stories keep him captivated for the full length of each book! They have over 700 children's stories, and they add 5 new ones every week, so there is never any reason to reread or become sick of one in particular (unless your child favors one).<br />
<br />
One of the features I really love is the "read to me" option. Upon opening a new "book" you can choose whether you want to read it aloud yourself, or have the recording read it to you. I find this especially helpful as a learning center with a set of headphones, or to simply allow my students to hear fluent reading when theirs seems a bit choppy. I've also tried the app out with some of my newcomers who speak little English, and they too, seemed to love it.</div>

Here are a couple of screen shots from a few areas inside the app. The illustrations just draw me in!</div>

Hello everyone! I was recently contacted about doing a book review for a new ebook being released by New York Times Bestselling Author, Craig Bouchard. This book is written for the upper elementary/middle school crowd, but being a book fan in general, I also loved it as well!</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgNWuXqXnROuRWhkPgZozT8LSxBG0dObREd21nGVkQqf1IbD5KucxyGKWm_U8hAqFBzI_Py73q6v6Bc_akCWCtbhwp4QdqttjJMjgeQGfJgx1ZszPGXiGPgiZVGOY431mKSou0cB1Mnt74/s1600/ai_cover_page_full.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgNWuXqXnROuRWhkPgZozT8LSxBG0dObREd21nGVkQqf1IbD5KucxyGKWm_U8hAqFBzI_Py73q6v6Bc_akCWCtbhwp4QdqttjJMjgeQGfJgx1ZszPGXiGPgiZVGOY431mKSou0cB1Mnt74/s1600/ai_cover_page_full.jpg" height="318" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
This is Mr. Bouchard's first adventure into the world of children's fiction and I truly hope that it will not be his last. I sat down with the ebook this evening and didn't put it down until I had finished the whole thing. Did I mention that I love to read?? </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: inherit;">A quick synopsis of the book would be an understatement, so I'll try to explain the context as best I can. The story works in layers. The book begins with the scene of a father telling a bedtime story to his three young daughters.The tale is about a very special young lady named Ai, who has very special abilities.</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><span style="background-color: white;">Throughout her amazing adventure, Ai </span><span style="background-color: white; line-height: 24.639999389648438px;">learns that with every struggle she faces while trying to find the secret treasure, she learns a valuable lesson in return. The most prominent lesson that she learns is that she is unable to do everything alone, and must also rely on her family and animal friends as well.</span></span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="line-height: 24.639999389648438px;"><br /></span></div>
<span style="background-color: white; font-family: inherit; line-height: 24.639999389648438px;"></span><br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="background-color: white; font-family: inherit; line-height: 24.639999389648438px;"><span style="font-family: inherit;">While on her adventures with her faithful horse Chuugi, a bluebird named Honmei, and a deer called Yorokobi Ai encounters magical trees, monsters, secrets, and treasures. There is always something new around the bend!</span></span></div>
<span style="background-color: white; font-family: inherit; line-height: 24.639999389648438px;">
</span><span style="background-color: white; font-family: inherit; line-height: 24.639999389648438px;"></span>
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="background-color: white; font-family: inherit; line-height: 24.639999389648438px;"><span style="font-family: inherit;">Besides painting a beautiful tale through the use of fantastic characters, amazing imagery, and colorful language, Craig Bouchard also integrates art, history, poetry, music, and even some mathematics!</span></span></div>
<span style="background-color: white; font-family: inherit; line-height: 24.639999389648438px;">

<span style="background-color: white; font-family: inherit; line-height: 24.639999389648438px;"><span style="font-family: inherit;">And if you have students that love the book, there is also a 3D videogame for iOS, Android and Kindle that might just be the spark their interests as well! Just spent the day at the amusement park with my daughter and it finally hit me. I go back to work on Monday. August 4th seems a bit too early if you ask me..But nonetheless, it's going to hit too quickly and I'll be a zombie the first couple of weeks until the sleep schedule kicks in again. I'm definitely going to miss my late night quiet time.<br />
<br />
Anyway, I've recently been gathering up all of my Back to School files and stuff and updating some of the older ones with new fonts and such and I thought I would share what I use for those first few days back, along with what we do the first couple of weeks in.<br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
Day One always brings with it my Back to School Facebook Wall. These are completed on the very first day and always make up my bulletin board for when Open House hits. The kids love them and I just recently updated some alignment issues and changed a few fonts. You can click the image below to grab one up if you like.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Back-to-School-FaceBook-Wall-First-Day-Fun-Hallway-Display-272392"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhsyHNUGlXQ3lPApS2554nCMZvG7LqaME1944BY0l1LSymglKENIqOOLahldPFUBjBtSB1CGMcCZorkmU5E3CJn_WakXvYxDgK2uTvjSDDSyuHo7hjHk2Lsh88Ffb4HciMRDNxOVWMH2Jc/s1600/BacktoSchool+Facebook.jpg" height="240" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I also always have some sort of color by math fact ready to go for morning work those first couple of days. Since we're just now third graders and haven't yet learned to multiply, it's always an addition fact mosaic that they jump into on the first day. They're super easy and I have them for all sorts of holidays and times of year, and my kids beg to do them during math stations. These are a couple of my back to school sets. </div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
This year I've made several other things for the Back to School season and haven't yet decided on which ones I want to use or file away for another day. I don't spend a LOT of time on BTS projects but I always try to get in at least one or two. Plus, I have an empty bulletin board in my classroom that I may just utilize for one of these projects.</div>

<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I'm headed into school tomorrow to wait around for the delivery man all day I guess. I have a new kidney table that I got from DonorsChoose.org that is being delivered and I have to be the one to take it off the truck.. ugh... My poor old muscles can't take much more strain after today's multiple rounds on the roller coaster. I'm definitely not as wild and crazy as I thought I was..my seven year old kicked my tail today!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Make sure you check back in real soon, and if you see anything you like, wishlist it! There might just be an event coming that you may like. Have a great weekend and I'll see you all on the flipside!</div>

Good Morning! I'm linking up with Christina from Second Grade Sugar and Spice for Wordless Wednesday! Here's what I've been up to!<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhqpbIEvV4PomSfdzV0aK_mupYPTUnyo7gXmKS4Nto_Kalw_p8H6HAWvulvdb8Z1qCIziHLYjsBdZmwVAd-jLynPERmZit9ymh18HcwM_EHHxO5QfPnZnqh86tile0r3VBrOA2QX3pDpsQ/s1600/2014-07-28+18.08.55.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhqpbIEvV4PomSfdzV0aK_mupYPTUnyo7gXmKS4Nto_Kalw_p8H6HAWvulvdb8Z1qCIziHLYjsBdZmwVAd-jLynPERmZit9ymh18HcwM_EHHxO5QfPnZnqh86tile0r3VBrOA2QX3pDpsQ/s1600/2014-07-28+18.08.55.jpg" height="640" width="480" /></a></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
I'm nearing the finish line....All except for that stinking closet in my classroom!! </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
So here's my question: What would you suggest I do to tame that explosion of materials you see in there?</div>
